66th Annual Cape Fear Garden Club Azalea Garden Tour

Come enjoy Southern hospitality amid the vibrant color of azaleas and spring flowers during the 66th Annual Cape Fear Garden Club Azalea Garden Tour© in the beautiful coastal community of Wilmington, North Carolina. An official event of the North Carolina Azalea Festival, the tour is one of the longest running and most popular garden tours in the South.
The tour will open Friday, April 5, 2019 at 10:00am with the spectacular Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at the home of Steve and Linda Smits, 1925 S. Live Oak Parkway, presented by WWAY-TV. Parking for the Ribbon Cutting is only available at Pine Valley Baptist Church, 3940 Shipyard Boulevard. Free round-trip bus service from the church to the Ribbon Cutting will be provided from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon. Entrance is free. Guests should arrive early to enjoy a pre-show of live music by Members of the Wilmington Symphony. The Wilmington Girls Choir will perform during the ceremony. This event includes all of the 2019 Cape Fear Garden Club, Inc. Azalea Belles©, the Citadel Summerall Guards ,the North Carolina Azalea Festival Queen and her Court. The Azalea Queen’s Garden Party, will be held in the Smits’ garden immediately following the Ribbon Cutting. Members of the Cape Fear Garden Club will serve punch and over 5000 homemade cookies.
NOTE: Beginning at 8:00am on Friday morning, there will be free round-trip bus service to the Ribbon Cutting from Pine Valley Baptist Church, 3940 Shipyard Boulevard. No parking will be available at Ribbon Cutting. We also encourage tour-goers to utilize Uber.
The 2019 Garden Tour Ticket includes photographs of the garden owner’s home and a snapshot of a special feature in their garden. There will be three “Secret Gardens” on the tour that are only accessible via trolleys. A map found in the center fold of the ticket clearly identifies the locations of the eleven gardens and the two trolley stops. Be on the lookout for Tablescapes designed by Heda the Table at three of the gardens. Also the New Hanover County Arboretum will have a scavenger hunt for Fairy Garden displays and on Saturday Pixie Beach Fairy Hair will be available for all ages while you enjoy a cup of punch and a cookie prepared by the Cape Fear Garden Club. The Japanese Garden located within the Arboretum will have a special feature honoring Hiroshi Sueyoshi. Local artists will be at work in the gardens throughout the weekend during the 4th Annual Plein Air Paint Out. Artists’ work will be on sale at the Wet Paint Sale on Sunday, April 7th at the Harbor Way Gardens located on Wrightsville Beach near the town hall from 1:00-4:00 pm. A portion of the proceeds goes to benefit Cape Fear Garden Club’s grant program to non-profit organizations for beautification, conservation and education in New Hanover County.
Beginning January 23, 2019 Garden Tour Tickets will be available on the website and at any of the locations listed below. Tickets will also be available at the Ribbon Cutting and at each garden during the tour. Tickets are $35 and are valid for all three days. Gardens are open 10:00am until 5:00pm daily except for Airlie Gardens which will NOT be open to the public on Friday. Children under 12 are admitted free with a paid adult. Cape Fear Garden Club Azalea Belles© will welcome visitors to each garden throughout the three-day tour.
Proceeds from the Cape Fear Garden Club Azalea Garden Tour© are reinvested in the community through beautification and horticultural grants within New Hanover County, scholarships at the University of North Carolina Wilmington and Cape Fear Community College, and conservation efforts at Battery Island, a National Audubon Society bird sanctuary. The club has granted over $1 million in donations to the community in the past 61 years.
